How to disable link preview when composing emails in macOS Ventura

The Mail app in macOS Ventura creates a preview of the Internet addresses inserted into a draft email. This can cause a positive reaction from most users of the system. Also, will undoubtedly be a useful addition in many situations. However, it would be nice if this automatic feature could be easily deactivated. We haven’t yet been able to find a common toggle to automatically display link previews in the macOS Ventura mail app. Accordingly, the only option is a workaround or unreasonably inconvenient manual intervention.

Typically, a preview always appears when a link copied to the clipboard is pasted into an email. However, you may have already noticed that the display of a link depends on the content. If the link is separate, the preview image will be embedded in the text. But if you put the link in a sentence or just between two punctuation marks, the preview will be disabled.

Another, but rather cumbersome option for hiding the URL preview is a small drop-down menu that appears when you hover the mouse cursor. Here you have the option to convert the link to text and thereby disable the preview.

Here’s how to turn a rich link on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 into a regular link:

  • If you tap the link preview, the tiny arrow will show up.
  • Tap the arrow and choose “Convert to Plain Link.”

If you like adding URLs as plain text, which was the old way to do it, you can keep doing that. Here is how:

In the application settings in the “Create a message” section, you can usually change the format of new messages to “plain text”. However, in this case, you will no longer be able to use all the features of text markup, such as “bold” or “italic” font, or elements such as graphic images in the caption.
