2. Clear previous Slack installation files

  • If the first time you try to install something fails, you need to get rid of the installation folder completely.
  • New Slack files can be broken by files from the first installation.
  • The default location for installation is C:Program Files (x86) or C:Program Files.
  • Find your Slack folder and delete it.
  • Then try again to set up the app.

3. Turn off your anti-virus software and firewall.

Sometimes, your security software might mark Slack installation files as suspicious when it shouldn’t. To avoid this, make sure you only download the app from reliable places, like the official Slack website. If you get the app from a third-party download site, it may also have PUPs or adware code sequences that you don’t want. This is why you should always download Slack from the official site and never from a third-party site.

Then turn off your antivirus software and firewall and see if you can install the app. After installing Slack, don’t forget to turn on your security software again. Also, if you use a VPN, you should turn it off when you install new programs.

4. Set up Slack in Compatibility Mode

Many users have confirmed that installing Slack in Compatibility Mode fixed the problem.

  1. Right-click the file that you want to install and choose Properties.
  2. Then click the tab that says “Compatibility.”
  3. Go to the “Run this program in compatibility mode” section and choose the previous OS version (Windows 8 or Windows 7).
  4. Start the process of installing Slack and see if your computer can do it.
  5. If the problem keeps happening, make sure that the installer is being run as an administrator.
  6. Go back to the Compatibility tab, check the box next to Run as administrator.

5. Tweak app installer settings

Check the settings for your app installer to make sure that your computer can install apps from places other than the Microsoft Store.

  1. Go to Settings, then Apps, and then Apps & features.
  2. Go to Choose where to get apps and click on it. Make sure that this option is not set to Microsoft Store Only (Recommended) by using the dropdown menu.
  3. If so, change it to Anywhere, but warn me before installing an app that’s not from the Microsoft Store
  4. Try to install Slack once more.

6. Restart the service that runs Windows Installer

  1. By pressing Windows + R, you can open a new window called “Run.”
  2. In the Run box, type services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Move down until you find Windows Installer Service. Check to see if the service is working.

Alternatively, you can right-click the Windows Installer service, click “Stop,” and then click “Restart.”

Then, right-click the service again, choose Properties, and change the startup type to Automatic. See if you can still install Slack.
